Le 11 mars 2011, un tremblement de terre de magnitude 9 sur l'échelle ouverte de Richter frappait le large des côtes nord-est de l'île de Honshu, au Japon, dans la région de Sendai. Dix minutes après le séisme, un tsunami d'une violence considérable a déferlé sur les côtes, provoquant une vague de 10 mètres dans la préfecture de Miyagi. Suite à ces catastrophes naturelles spectaculaires, la perte des systèmes de refroidissement des réacteurs de la centrale atomique de Fukushima, dans la région voisine, a provoqué un accident nucléaire d'une ampleur inédite au Japon.
